Job Description

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Proficient in outpatient diagnosis coding guidelines
  • Proficient in CPT/HCPCS code assignment including Evaluation & Management facility coding guidelines
  • Knowledge of OPPS reimbursement structures
  • Proficient at writing AHIMA-compliant physician queries
  • Adept at comparing documentation, code assignment and charge in the financial system for accuracy and completeness
  • Functional knowledge of facility EMR, encoder and other support software
  • Lead/supervise staff and assist in managing departmental workflow
  • Computer training: Facility specific HIS systems, Document Imaging software; Microsoft Office, and Electronic Health Records
  • Extensive knowledge of medical record documentation requirements
  • Knowledge of APC classifications
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills as well as excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced problem-solving skills and ability to quickly analyze a situation.
  • Attention to detail is crucial to this position.
  • Other functions as deemed necessary to complete and final bill claims accurately
  • Ability to fairly handle any team member related issues with performance

Qualifications

  • Five (5) years’ experience performing medical record coding in an acute care setting; with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a supervisor, subject matter expert, or auditor
  • Bachelor’s degree in any healthcare field; or formal coding classes completed and passed will be considered instead of a university education
  • AHIMA or AAPC approved credential required
  • Preferred Computer Applications: Microsoft Office applications, 3M Encoder, Cerner, EPIC, Meditech, and others as required
