    What is the role about 

    Cambridge Assessment is currently looking for experienced java developers to join its growing team in Manila. The successful candidate will utilise the latest web development techniques in a fast-paced Agile environment to deliver and support the next generation of start-to-end assessment applications. He/She will have the opportunity to directly engage and collaborate with counterparts in Cambridge, working on software that makes a difference to our community of learners everywhere in the world. 

    Who we are looking for 
    The following skills and experience will be advantageous for the role: 
    • Relevant IT/Software degree qualified, or equivalent industry recognized qualification(s), at least 2 years’ experience. 
    • Web Development technologies such as Java, JEE, Spring, Hibernate, REST / SOAP Web Services, Javascript, CSS & HTML. 
    • Industry recognized certification in one or more of the named technologies is a distinct advantage. 
    • At least 2 years’ working experience in a database technology, Oracle or MySQL as relevant examples. 
    • Comfortable and familiar in using industry standard software development tools and practices including but not limited to SVN / GIT source code control systems. 
    • Experience in an Agile development environment. 
    • Confident written and oral communication skills, demonstrated ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical peers and users. 

    What you will be doing 

    Here’s what the role has in store for you: 
    • Responsibility for the delivery of assigned modules and tasks, working collaboratively in Sprints. 
    • Coding, testing and troubleshooting software programs, utilising the appropriate hardware, database and programming technologies, and adopting the prescribed team approach and standards. 
    • Collaboration with our Testing and Service Desk teams to determine system problems, and with our Infrastructure, Application Engineer, Database and other related teams to deploy code releases swiftly and efficiently. 
    • Active engagement within the Development team, sharing of ideas and assisting the team where practical, participating in code reviews and the underlying environment to understand and minimize negative impact on system performance. 
    • Production and delivery of software manuals, or other project/technical documentation as and when required. 
    • Continue evolving and developing knowledge and experience in new programming languages and technologies. 
    • Continue improving depth of understanding of the respective applications/websites looked after by the team, and of the business context / rules behind the applications and sites.

The Manila office was set up in 2003 when the Press decided to partly maintain its IT systems offshore. It was an attempt to provide a direction towards a new way of developing, implementing, and achieving software processes at a reasonable cost without compromising the brand’s character.

In 2012, the Manila office began to function as Regional Operating Headquarters (ROHQ). Through its new business identity the Manila office may now generate income by performing qualified services for the Press’s affiliates, subsidiaries, or branches globally.

And in 2014, Cambridge English Language Assessment (CELA) became one of our partners. It is the world’s largest provider of English language curriculums and qualifications for young learners and adults. It is also one of the international examination boards managed by Cambridge Assessment.

Today, the Manila office has grown to 400 plus personnel with expertise in the fields of Information Technology, Digital Publishing, and Customer Services. For thirteen years the Manila office has remarkably made exceptional service and technological contribution to the fulfilment of the Press’s goals and objectives. Currently, the organisation is making initiatives to developing new technological solutions and service innovations to meet the growing needs of our partners within the Cambridge community. Cambridge University Press and Cambridge Assessment are continually making investments to achieve their desired products and services that would enable current and future customers develop better online experience.
