Here are some skills that you can master to get hired in one of today’s most in demand occupations.
Skillset #1Occupations: Purchase/ Logistics/ Supply Chain
Organisational skills: It’s essential to be organised so that business operations, as a whole, go according to plan and no detail goes amiss.Management skills: You must be good at handling people and determining their capabilities to efficiently delegate tasks amongst the team.Problem solving: This will be the determining factor whether this career is cut out for you. Everyday things go wrong in a supply chain, and it’s part of your job to think quickly, logically and analytically.
The goal in these jobs is to ensure flawless operations to maintain the business. A supply chain analyst, for example, oversees the company’s supply chain and determines how to utilise them efficiently. He is in charge of developing and executing strategies that’ll ensure material availability for product builds. The ability to coordinate complex processes is vital in these fields to have every aspect of the business synchronised.
Skillset #2Occupations: HR & AdminInterpersonal skills: Part of the job is to face people on a daily basis, so being comfortable in meetings and mingling with others is important.Team player: Working harmoniously in a team makes the job easier and often results to better outputs.Conflict management: In HR, you will have to deal with all kinds of conflicts - from day-to-day grievances and people management, to legal issues. Being able to spot problems and help people cope will make you a great candidate.
HR & Admin jobs revolve around people, which makes it very important for its employees to build good relationships. They are normally the go-to people at the office for a variety of workplace issues, so it helps if they are approachable. Being a team player is important, as you have to manage both sides of the coin - what the employer wants, and what employees want. If you can think strategically, you can go far in this line of work.
Skillset #3Occupations: Software, hardware and telecom
Analytical thinking: Codes and algorithms are complex and require critical thinking to ensure proper programming and execution.Patience: Working IT in any capacity requires a lot of trial and error before achieving a perfect end product. If you are helping to manage other people’s IT, then patience is a must! Attention to detail: This is a no brainer. Sloppy deployments, miswritten code and seemingly minor mistakes can bring down an entire system.
The growth of these industries is inevitable, meaning job opportunities are plenty. To be successful, you must take note of these skills, as job roles for these fields are not easy. Web developers, for instance, do not only require computer skills, but also attentiveness to detail and a skeptical mind. It’s part of the job to oversee the whole process of creating websites, from planning, programming, testing, up to maintenance. Being impatient and careless in jobs like this is definitely not acceptable.
Skillset #4Occupation: Customer service
Multi-tasking: In customer service, the ability to multi-task is essential to cater to the different demands of many consumers at once.Good product knowledge: To provide quality service, knowing your product well is a must to effectively assist customers in solving their problems. Positive language and initiative: This comes with experience, but being able to have a positive, active voice will be handy when dealing with an upset customer who needs to be heard. A single negative customer service experience can do major damage to a brand.
Most businesses offer customer service to ensure consumer retention, and while many think that it’s an easy task, assisting customers can cause headaches. Being on the receiving end of complaints and demands, the ability to look through accounts, transaction details and policies while talking to customers at the same time is difficult - but necessary. More importantly, customers reach out to you with the belief that you have the answer to their question, so studying and understanding your products is a must.
Skillset #5Occupation: Sales & Business Development
Outgoing personality and confidence: Being a people person is key in building networks necessary to succeed in these fields. For your prospects to say yes to you, you must be confident enough to have them trust and believe both in you and your product/business.
Business intelligence: While you need to know the product and services you’re selling, you also need to know everything you can about your competitors. You need to be able to do a strong competitor analysis and understand where you can bring a competitive advantage for your business. Persistence: This is the number one skill that all salespeople need. In this role you face a lot of rejection, but it’s the people who try try try again who close the big deals.
Nothing is more important in this field than building connections and strengthening your network. In sales, your job is to get on the good side of prospective clients or business partners. To do this, you need to be sociable, likable and confident to gain their trust. And of course, your passion for selling is also important to truly catch the interest of your prospects.
